Welwitschia mirabilis is a unique gymnosperm that can only be found in the Namib desert, spanning across Namibia and Angola. It is the only known species in its genus, making it truly one-of-a-kind. Welwitschia belongs to the family Welwitschiaceae and order Welwitschiales in the division Gnetophyta. It is one of the three living genera in Gnetophyta, along with Gnetum and Ephedra. Informal sources often describe the plant as a “living fossil.”
